Regardless of industry, a company’s talent is their greatest resource. However, few companies really understand this fact, and fewer still act on it by investing in their most valuable commodity. While the immediate benefits of employee training and development are pretty well understood, there are numerous benefits that leaders may want to consider before cutting training budgets to save a couple quick bucks. First, training programs help an organization attract and retain the best talent out there. One of the main reasons employees look for other jobs is a lack of professional development opportunities. By providing employees with a robust training program, not only does an organization show its commitment to employee development, it will become highly sought-after in the labor market. Training can also identify which employees are ready for promotion. Obviously, training can help employees develop competencies over time, but those who take initiative to develop themselves might be ready for more responsibility and growth with the company. It can also lead to overall cost savings. Well-trained employees will do their jobs efficiently, but also might be able to come up with better ways to go about their day-to-day tasks. Empowering employees with training will make the company nimbler, and by extension, more profitable.
